Richard Barnes State of Exception, 2012
The objects left behind in the desert by undocumented migrants on their journey to the U.S. are the unnoticed traces of the human experience of transit. Forced and illegal migration may receive a lot of attention in the media and political debate, but on a human level, it often remains distant and is rarely discussed. These landscapes made of the physical traces of these extreme experiences can only be found on certain locations. They seem to be waiting to be noticed and looked at not with pity or anger, but with understanding, because they have many personal stories to reveal about movement, violence and liability.
